First edition, featuring the first appearance of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's iconic feminist short-story, "The Yellow Wall Paper," seven years before it would be published by Small, Maynard & Co. in its first stand-alone version. 824 pp. Bound in late 19th-century half calf over marbled boards. Very Good with rubbing to covers. Faded title and volume number written to spine, evidence of bookplate removal to front and rear pastedowns. Hinges tender. The first appearance of the famous short story, which is illustrated unlike the 1897 edition, contained complete in the January, 1892 issue of New England Magazine. "Obviously like her other early fiction, 'The Yellow Wall-paper' was loosely based on Stetson's own experience. To her credit, however she crafted the tale with care. 'When my awful story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' comes out', she proudly wrote Martin Luther Lane, 'you must try and read it. Walter says he has read it four times, and thinks it is the most ghastly tale he ever read. Says it beats Poe,' whose tales she had recently reread. Scharnhorst, p. 17.
