Der Kibbuz als Mikrokosmos
Ein früher Roman von Amos Oz
Seit seinem ersten veröffentlichten Werk, das vor fünfunddreissig Jahren erschien, hat sich Amos Oz mit immer neuen Beschreibungen der israelischen Zustände als einer der renommiertesten Schriftsteller des Landes etabliert – und mit Stellungnahmen zum aktuellen Geschehen profilierte er sich auch als kritischer Intellektueller und politischer Kommentator. So war es sowohl der Dichter als auch der politische Autor, der 1992 mit dem Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet wurde.
Zwar schien der Schriftsteller durch die vom deutschsprachigen Feuilleton abgedruckten politischen Essays und durch regelmässige Übersetzungen seines fiktionalen Werks immer präsent zu sein, aber gerade einer seiner schönsten Romane blieb bis jetzt unübersetzt: «Ein anderer Ort», sein zweites Buch, das schon 1966 erschienen war, ist erst in diesem Jahr in der flüssigen Übersetzung von Ruth Achlama auf Deutsch herausgekommen. Ort der Handlung ist ein Kibbuz an der nördlichen Grenze Israels; die Figuren sind die Kibbuzniks, die ihrem Alltag und ihren Launen und Leidenschaften nachgehen und deren Lebensläufe miteinander verwoben sind. Dabei gibt es keine Handlung im herkömmlichen Sinn, sondern nur die Darstellung der Beziehungen zwischen den Kibbuzniks und den Versuch, ihren inneren Befindlichkeiten nachzuspüren.
Die Figur des Erzählers hat Oz den jiddischen Chronisten nachempfunden, zugleich ist dieser Erzähler das Klatschmaul, das in jeder engen Gemeinschaft das soziale Gewebe zusammenhält: Zeuge der Geschehnisse, der beobachtet, berichtet und kommentiert. Dieser Erzähler weiss alles und sagt alles – würde alles sagen, aber Oz entzieht ihm immer wieder das Wort und lässt die Figuren über sich selbst oder über einander nachdenken. Ihr Pathos und ihre Selbstgefälligkeit konterkariert dann wieder der Erzähler mit bissigen Kommentaren – je länger man ihm folgt, desto deutlicher entpuppt sich, was zuerst ein bieder-realistisches Bild des Kibbuzalltags zu sein schien, als ironische Beschreibung einer krisengeschüttelten Gesellschaft. Denn während die Kibbuzniks einer sozialistischen Utopie entgegenzugehen glauben, werden sie von ihrer Vergangenheit eingeholt und in ihrer Gegenwart existenziell gefährdet. Es ist kein harmonisches Zusammenleben, sondern ein Alltag voller Leid und Leidenschaft, Streit und Versöhnung, der hier vorgeführt wird.
Der Kibbuz als Mikrokosmos, symptomatisch für eine Gesellschaft, die sich zu definieren versucht und sich dabei selbst erfindet – das ist der thematische Hintergrund, vor dem Oz ein subtiles Bild der noch jungen israelischen Gesellschaft zeichnet, ja, eine menschliche Komödie, die das Lokale transzendiert und Allgemeingültigkeit erlangt.
