Owner's signatures on the blank prelims. A successor to Orr's Circle of the Sciences, a part-work produced between 1854 and 1856, with many of the same headings. Although Wylde's work is undated this probably places it in the early 1860s. Stoutly bound with four raised bands. It is doubtful whether Lord Brougham, whose portrait forms the frontispiece to vol.1, actually wrote any of it; it is however an acknowledgement of his role in supporting the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.
