Esemplare in legatura d amatore, fatta realizzare ad hoc per il libro di Gozzano, che conserva i due piatti della copertina originale; in ottime condizioni (minima mancanza all angolino della copertina anteriore, senza perdite di testo; prime carte appena brunite; suggestive impronte di fiori lasciati a seccare tra le pagine 16-[17], 18-[19], 70-75 e 84-85; ex libris privato rimosso al verso del frontespizio). Forse la più celebre delle raccolte gozzaniane, contiene per la prima volta in libro «La signorina Felicita, ovvero la felicità». «Nasce qui il personaggio destinato, più di ogni altro del suo tempo, a rovesciare la maniera illustre del maggior poeta, il personaggio che diverrà famoso della "Signorina Felicita", per ora affidato a "L ipotesi" (autunno 1907) e poi sviluppato e modificato sensibilmente nella "Nuova antologia" del 16 marzo 1909. Può dirsi questo il fulcro della nuova raccolta di versi a cui Gozzano pensa in questi anni, sino a quando la pubblica presso Treves (Milano) nel febbraio 1911, nel volume "I colloqui", copertina di Leonardo Bistolfi» (Guglielminetti, voce del Dizionario biografico degli italiani, vol. 58, 2002). -- Il manoscritto era stato consegnato all editore nel settembre 1910; Gozzano stesso ne aveva realizzate tre copie in manoscritto calligrafico (di sua mano) da affidare ai maggiori critici letterari dell epoca (Luigi Ambrosini, Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, Francesco Pastonchi): il libro era molto atteso e la data di uscita, fissata con largo anticipo al 3 febbraio 1911, fu poi posticipata per problemi tecnici dell editore al 27 febbraio data nella quale il libro apparve contemporaneamente in tutte le librerie italiane, affiancato dalle recensioni sul «Secolo» (Ambrosini) e sulla «Stampa» (Borgese). Pastonchi del «Corriere» non ritenne di pubblicare una recensione, causando le lacrime del suscettibile poeta (De Toma, "Le non godute" e altre note gozzaniane, in: Lettere italiane 37:1: 83-108, pp. 97-100). in 8°, copertina originale in carta patinata con bellissimo disegno di Leonardo Bistolfi conservata entro bella legatura in piena pelle bordeaux, con tre cornici oro e inserti in rilievo di pelle di nera al piatto superiore, mentre al posteriore vi sono i versi gozzaniani «Non amo che le rose che non colsi»; dorso liscio lavorato in oro e risguardi in carta pettinata; pp. [4] 156 [4]; elaborata testatina decorata al principio della raccolta. Prima edizione.
