First edition, very rare offprint. "In 1938 Mott devised the theoretical description of the effect that light has on a photographic emulsion at the atomic level" (Britannica). Until Mott's work, the microscopic processes underlying the development of a photographic image were unknown. He described the solid-state photolysis of silver bromide and the subsequent ionic migrations that led eventually to silver granules, which served to nucleate development of the photographic image. This "has remained the foundation of photographic theory" (Pippard, Sir Nevill Francis Mott, C. H. 30 September 1905-8 August 1996, Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society 44 (1998), p. 325). Mott (1905-1996) won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1977 for his work on the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems. 8vo, pp. [1, blank], 286-292.
