About this Item

Description:

Octavo. 16 pp. First edition. Removed from binding, else very nice condition with only minor toning to the extremities. In A Mormon Fifty, Crawley and Flake write, "Orson Pratt assumed the presidency of the British Mission in August 1848. Enjoined by Brigham Young to 'print, publish, and superintend the emigration,' he wrote sixteen tracts during the next two-and-one-half years" (35). A prolific pamphleteer, Pratt's tracts were issued in great quantity at a time where conversions in Great Britain were at their highest levels. In 1851, they would be collected in one volume. Pratt s Reply to a Pamphlet first appeared in the LDS publication Millennial Star published in England and edited by Pratt. This present copy comports with Crawley's points of issue (Crawley 406) and is considered the first edition, printed from the Millennial Star text. Two other editions came out the same year. Reply to a Pamphlet is largely a point-by-point response to an anonymous work (apparently authored by Joseph N. Paton), which was responding to one of Pratt s earlier tracts. Cawley note that the Paton s pamphlet was "[f]illed with invective and not a forceful polemic" but suggest that Pratt only bother to respond because Paton s pamphlet was a response to Pratt s Divine Authority. An interesting and early piece of LDS history and theology. All contemporary editions are quite uncommon in commerce. Flake 6537. Seller Inventory # 9244
