Very good copy in a later gilt-blocked, grained leather binding. Some minor wear to spine edges, with panel edges slightly dust-dulled and rubbed. Corners sharp with an overall tight, bright and clean impression. Related newspaper clippings from 'The Gentleman's Magazine, for April, 1813.' tipped in to endpapers and facing half-title. Condition: ESTC N9421. 8vo. 5.75 x 9 inches. xvi + 158 pp. In original sugar paper wrappers with new spine and title label. Deckled edges. Some margin tears and water stains but otherwise a very good copy. The Essay was first published in 1748 by Michaiah (or Michaijah) Towgood (1700-92), a dissenting minister from Devon and author of religious letters and tracts.
