Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. 1 p.l., iv, 4, [1 leaf], 249, [1]errata, [11]index. modern half calf (joints rubbed, endleaves foxed). First Edition of this popular guide to print collecting by the English miscellaneous writer who is best known for his numerous books of picturesque travels illustrated with aquatints after his own drawings. It was in this work that Gilpin first introduced the concept of 'picturesque beauty'. Among the prints singled out for detailed consideration are 'The Resurrection of Lazarus' by Bloemart, 'The Death of Polycrates' by Salvator Rosa, 'The Triumph of Silenus' by Peter Testa, Waterloo's 'Tobias', 'The Deluge at Coeverden' by Roman Le Hooghe, and Hogarth's 'Rake's Progress'. The collector is cautioned against indulging a desire to possess all of the works of any master, against a superstitious veneration for names, against rating a print's value by its scarceness, against buying restrikes and copies, and against acquiring poor impressions.
