Added to the grammar is a vocabulary of over 3,000 words. Volapuk was an early "auxiliary language," invented to become a universal language of trade. It predated Esperanto by almost a decade and enjoyed a brief flurry of popularity in the 1880s. According to the preface, there were 210,000 speakers of the language at time of publication, as well as eleven periodicals dedicated to its propagation. It was unable to maintain its niche after Esperanto's arrival and has since become the more obscure language of the two. Scarce.
