It follows on similar volumes by the same compilers on South and South-East Asia (1965) and Africa (1971). The compilers visited most of the important libraries (national, university, public, and special) in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland to collect material for this volume, also the Public Record Office, county record offices, missionary societies, and all other likely repositories. Attempts were made to locate material still in private hands. As in the earlier volumes, a great variety of subject is represented in the documents included, which range from important governmental and diplomatic records to the unpublished writings of scholars and letters home from persons in all walks of life.".
