Vicino ai romantici e rivolto al teatro, si orientò poi ai romanzi storici, come la trilogia dei moschettieri, composta da I tre moschettieri, Vent'anni dopo e Il visconte di Bragelonne; o altri celeberrimi come Il conte di Montecristo (1ª ed. originale 1844-1846, 1ª ed. italiana 1846), La regina Margot, La dama di Monsoreau e Il tulipano nero.Figlio di un generale francese, fu il padre di due scrittori: il figlio omonimo, Alexandre Dumas, e Henry Bauër. Close to the romantics and turned to the theater, he then turned to historical novels, such as the Musketeers trilogy, composed of The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years Later and The Viscount of Bragelonne; or other very famous ones such as The Count of Monte Cristo (1st original ed. 1844-1846, 1st Italian ed. 1846), Queen Margot, The Lady of Monsoreau and The Black Tulip.
