Vicino ai romantici e rivolto al teatro, si orientò poi ai romanzi storici, come la trilogia dei moschettieri, composta da I tre moschettieri, Vent'anni dopo e Il visconte di Bragelonne; o altri celeberrimi come Il conte di Montecristo (1ª ed. originale 1844-1846, 1ª ed. italiana 1846), La regina Margot, La dama di Monsoreau e Il tulipano nero.Figlio di un generale francese, fu il padre di due scrittori: il figlio omonimo, Alexandre Dumas, e Henry Bauër.
