Archim�de avait dit-on utilis� les miroirs ardents au si�ge de Syracuse (213 av. J.-C.) pour incendier le flotte romaine. C'est Anth�mius de Tralles (474-534) qui fait le premier r�cit de l'utilisation de catapultes et de miroirs ardents. Dutens analyse ici les diff�rentes sources historique, car la possibilit� de construire des miroirs m�talliques concaves de cette taille a �t� contest� par les scientifiques, dont Descartes en particulier. En 1747, le Comte de Buffon prouve au ch�teau de la Muette, en pr�sence du roi Louis XV, lors d?une v�ritable exhibition, la r�alit� des miroirs ardents d?Archim�de devant un public compos� de gens de qualit�.
