"In Germany it was not until 1901 that Heinz Wolgemuth (1863-1836) produced a potentially satifactory apparatus for delivering a chloroform-oxygen mixture. This apparatus was directly based upon another, designed by L. Prochownick, of Hamburg, in 1895, for giving oxygen towards the end of chloroform or ether anaesthesia in order to improve the patient's general condition in the immediate post-operative period, or, in an anaesthetic emergency, for resuscitation". In adapting Prochownick's apparatus Wohlgemuth simply added a chloroform reservoir from which the liquid was dropped into a U-tube in the path of the gas.
