Demi veau de l'époque. Un volume in-8 (211x131 mm), xx-420 pages et une planche hors texte. Coiffes abîmées, mors supérieur fendillé. Des rousseurs, parfois importantes. Edition originale de cet ouvrage peu commun de Laborde, neurologue et neurophysiologiste français. Laborde reprend de nombreuses observations étudiées sur le cerveau à l'état frais et après durcissement dans une solution d'acide chromique ou de bichlorate de potasse et mentionne, pour la première fois, l'usage du microscope. Contrairement à la théorie de l'inflammation très en vogue à l'époque, il décrit le ramollissement spontané comme un phénomène organique de nature non inflammatoire, en rapport avec des modifications artérielles. Pour Laborde, le ramollissement cérébral correspond à une nécrose dont les lésions vasculaires primitives sont la cause. Ce travail de Laborde représente un bon exemple de ce que pouvait être la neurologie dans les hôpitaux de Paris avant que ne s'épanouisse l'école de Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893). (Poirier).
