Zwei Sätze braucht der Erzählmagier Roth, dann ist er mitten drin in seinem Lieblingsthema, das von den Abhängigkeiten und Verführungen rund um den Campus handelt, und erzählt uns von der außergewöhnlichen Liebe des Professors zu seiner ehemaligen Studentin. Zur Erzählzeit des Romans ist dies alles sechseinhalb Jahre her; aber plötzlich, am Silvesterabend des Jahres 2000, erhält der Professor von Consuela einen Anruf, der ihn mit dem Sterben einer geliebten Person und mit dem Sterben der Liebe und der Freundschaft generell konfrontiert. Eros und Thanatos liegen in Roths großem kleinen Buch wieder einmal eng beieinander.
Es steht zu befürchten, dass Roths Roman von Teilen der Kritik als lüstern-senile Altherrenfantasie verrissen wird -- zu oft ist von großen Brüsten und (perversen?) Praktiken zwischen einem alternden Mann und seiner jungen Freundin die Rede, und die Art und Weise, wie Roth detailliert und voller Erzählfreude diese Passagen zelebriert, wird manchem als anstößig aufstoßen. "Und dennoch war es von Pornographie so weit entfernt, wie es nur sein konnte", heißt es an einer Stelle des Romans, und dieser Satz könnte als Motto auch über dem Bändchen stehen. Mit Das sterbende Tier nämlich ist Roth eine weitere faszinierende, sehr melancholische und überzeugende Bestandsaufnahme über die Liebe, aber auch über das Altern gelungen. Nicht so großartig wie Der menschliche Makel vielleicht, aber besser und schöner und diskreter wohl als die meisten Romane, die zu diesem Thema seit Lolita geschrieben wurden. --Stefan Kellerer
