About this Item
First edition of the poet's first book, 8vo, pp. xii, [3], 20-120; original stiff orange paper wrappers, cream paper shelfback, printed paper label on upper cover; spine rather cracked, front joint tender; good, or better. Crocker (1797-1861) was of a humble upbringing, and he worked as a shoemaker for twenty years, writing down verse in his idle hours. He subsequently worked in bookselling and was later sexton at Chichester Cathedral. "Among his warmest friends was Poet Laureate Robert Southey, who asserted that the sonnet 'To the British Oak' [included in this volume] was among the finest, if not the finest, in the English language" (pennyspoetry[dot]fandom[dot]com).
