Ouvrage très important d après Carteret ; I, 105. 3/3 volumes de 217mm x 136mm [4]-327-[1]; [4]-316-[4]; [4]-341-[3] pp Ce roman fit crier au scandale car Barbey avait publié la même année Les prophètes du passé, ouvrage empreint d'une piété exigeante. La sincérité de la foi de l'écrivain fut alors fortement mise en doute. Bon exemplaire. Complet de l errata à la fin du deuxième, rarement présent. Reliures demi-veau (de l'époque), dos lisse orné de filets dorés, cachet ancien sur la page de titre du tome II. Dos et charnières grossièrement restaurés, certains coins et coiffes usés, usures sur les plats, rousseurs éparses, mouillure angulaire sur plusieurs feuillets au tome I, déchirure angulaire sur deux feuillets. État correct malgré tout. Half-calf (of the period) bindings, smooth spine adorned with gilt fillets, old stamp on the title page of volume II. Spine and hinges roughly restored, some corners and headcaps worn, wear on the covers, scattered foxing, corner dampstain on several leaves in volume I, corner tear on two leaves.
