Issued as Series II, volume 5 in the publisher's Bibliotheca Himalayica series, edited by H. K. Kuloy. Mainwaring (1824-1894) was a British Indian army officer and a linguist. In 1867 he was appointed by the government to produce a dictionary and grammar of the Lepcha language. He compiled the first English dictionary of the Lepcha (or Róng) language first published in 1898 in Berlin. He lived in Darjeeling at Lebong and later at Poloongdong and studied the Lepcha language under a Lepcha priestess who learned some English (see Wikipedia).
