INTERVIEW DE MATHIEU ROBIN :
Dès la première scène, le lecteur est plongé en pleine nature, celle des grands espaces américains. Pourquoi avoir choisi ce décor ? Est-il le point de départ de votre roman ?
Cette histoire devait se situer dans une forêt très reculée, à plusieurs heures d'un premier village. Les parcs nationaux américains me sont tout de suite venus en tête car ce sont des espaces gigantesques et sauvages. Ce sont également des territoires imprégnés des contes et légendes de la culture indienne, une mythologie cruciale pour cette histoire.
Mais le point de départ de ce roman est un livre de Boris Cyrulnik, Sauve-toi, la vie t'appelle, où l'auteur raconte un épisode crucial de son enfance. En pleine Seconde Guerre mondiale, raflé et enfermé avec d'autres personnes avant la déportation, il décide de s'enfuir, et c'est ce qui lui sauve la vie. Cette notion de désobéissance aux adultes (donc symboliquement aux parents) pour arriver à s'en sortir m'a beaucoup hanté. J'ai voulu en faire un récit initiatique. J'ai transposé l'histoire dans un contexte fantastique, dans lequel des enfants livrés à eux-mêmes doivent tenter de survivre face à une situation extrême. Ils vont devoir affronter leurs doutes et décider de suivre ou non les consignes de leurs parents.
Vous travaillez également dans le cinéma. Des souvenirs cinématographiques ont-ils influencé l'écriture de ce roman ?
Ce roman est très inspiré et influencé par le cinéma. Premièrement car j'écris des scénarios et pense toujours par le prisme de l'image et donc de l'action ; et deuxièmement car cette histoire est marquée par le cinéma qui a imprégné mon enfance. Ce récit fantastique est un hommage assumé au cinéma de Steven Spielberg, dont les films comme Rencontre du troisième type ou La Guerre des mondes, pour ne citer qu'eux, racontent avec poésie des drames familiaux au travers d'événements extraordinaires. C'est d'ailleurs aussi pour cela que j'ai tenu à situer mon récit dans les années 1980 aux USA. Je voulais me replonger dans l'époque et les décors qui avaient nourri mon imaginaire d'enfant.
Pour survivre à cette bête mystérieuse vivant dans la montagne, le jeune Marcus va devoir affronter ses peurs et ses obsessions. Qu'est-ce qui vous a inspiré ce personnage ? Comment avez-vous pensé son évolution dans le roman ?
Marcus est inspiré de ma propre expérience et celle de certains membres de ma famille. J'ai été un petit garçon très impressionnable voire, disonsle franchement, très peureux. Je connais bien les TOC de Marcus. Encore aujourd'hui, je vis dans l'anticipation des dangers pouvant arriver à chaque coin de rue. Cette intranquillité, j'ai voulu la coucher sur le papier pour la partager avec d'autres inquiets et briser la solitude que l'on peut ressentir face à ses pe

About the Author
Scénariste et réalisateur, Mathieu Robin vit à Montpellier. Après des études de cinéma, il écrit et réalise son premier court-métrage en 1996 et coscénarise en 2004 le long-métrage Les Grandes Personnes (réalisé par Anna Novion et sorti en salles en 2008). En 2005, il novélise pour Actes Sud Jeunesse dans la collection "Ciné-roman" son court-métrage Pensée assise réédité en 2015 dans la collection Roman Ado. Dysorthographié, l'écriture littéraire demeure complexe pour lui. Il privilégie donc le développement de projets audiovisuels. En 2013, il renoue avec l'expérience littéraire grâce à une commande : la biographie d'un architecte. Cette écriture longue et intense l'enchante et lui permet d'apprivoiser sa dysorthographie. Il repense alors à une histoire qui le hante depuis plusieurs années et écrit Ses griffes et ses crocs.
