Helene B�hlau war die Tochter des Weimarer Verlagsbuchh�ndlers Hermann B�hlau und dessen Frau Therese geb. Thon. Sie genoss eine sorgf�ltige Privaterziehung. Ab 1882 ver�ffentlichte sie Novellen und Romane. 1886 heiratete sie den Architekten und Privatgelehrten Friedrich Arnd, der, um sie heiraten zu k�nnen, zum Islam �bertrat und sich von da an Omar al Raschid Bey nannte. Helene B�hlau ver�ffentlichte weiterhin unter ihrem Geburtsnamen, manchmal mit dem Zusatz "Frau al Raschid Bey". Das Ehepaar lebte ein Jahr lang in Konstantinopel, dann in M�nchen. Nach dem Tod des Ehemannes 1911 wohnte Helene B�hlau in Ingolstadt, M�nchen, Widdersberg und Augsburg. Ihr Sohn bildete 1915 als ca. 25-j�hriger Gefreiter in M�nchen Rekruten aus, darunter Victor Klemperer.
