New Haven, octavo, xxiv, 479, [1] p., frontispiece, 8 plates (2 colored), and text woodcuts. ***CONTENT: In the first half of the nineteenth century, the three American editions of Bakewell's "Geology" were the treatise of choice for advanced schools and colleges on this side of the Atlantic. Enthusiastically endorsed by Yale's Benjamin Silliman, who praised its style and readability, it also presented a comprehensive, insightful treatment of geologic theory and processes, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Silliman gives this work a decidedly "American" flavor via his editing and his 118 p. appendix, partly intended to illustrate the compatibility of geologic evidence and Biblical revelations. ***CONDITION: This is a Very Good copy in the original publisher's boards, rebacked with later congruent brown linen, with the original paper title label relaid. The covers are sound, with old discoloration and mild edgewear; backstrip complete. Joints and hinges solid, binding firm. Page edges untrimmed. Light scattered foxing in the text, but many pages are fresh, clean and bright. The plates are well preserved, and include a hand-colored geologic map of England, an engraved giant trilobite, and colored cross-sections of strata. Silliman's supplement occupies pages 389-466. The contemporary signatures of John W. Hicks and Alex Palmer on the preliminaries are the only evidence of previous ownership. This is an attractive, well-preserved copy of a classic treatise.
