Tre volumi in-8° grande (cm 14x22) in brossura editoriale con titoli entro cornice ai piatti anteriori. Pp. xii, 562, 2 non numerate; 603, 1 non numerata; 477, 3 non numerate. Ritratto dell'autore inciso in rame all'antiporta del primo volume. Eccellente edizione di questo classico cui si aggiunge, rispetto alle precedenti edizioni, la vita del Maffei scritta da Girolamo Tiraboschi e le notizie del volgarizzatore. Lievi segni del tempo e d'uso ai piatti e ai dorsi con piccoli restauri, ma esemplare genuino e marginoso. Volgarizzamento ottocentesco degli Historiarum Indicarum libri XVI (1593), opera che riveste eccezionale importanza per lo studio della penetrazione coloniale e commerciale europea nelle Indie Orientali così come in quelle Occidentali, con speciale riferimento al Brasile per quanto riguarda il Nuovo Mondo (con un resoconto che il Borba de Moraes reputa estremamente accurato) e all'India, alla Cina e al Giappone per quel che attiene all'Asia. Giovanni Pietro Maffei (Bergamo, 1536-Tivoli, 1603), gesuita, Segretario della Repubblica di Genova e professore di eloquenza al Collegio Romano, compose l'opera a Lisbona avvalendosi di una straordinaria messe di documenti, quasi tutti originali, ponendosi fra i primissimi storici occidentali nel senso moderno a trattare delle vicende dell'Estremo Oriente; fondamentale rilievo è conferito nel libro alla Compagnia di Gesù e al suo ruolo evangelizzatore nei paesi in oggetto.
