Stephen Decatur, Jr. (1779-1820) was a United States naval officer and commodore who helped shape the US Navy into a viable force. In almost every theater of operation, Decatur's service was characterized by acts of heroism and exceptional performance. He is the youngest man to reach the rank of captain in the history of the United States Navy. His service in the Navy took him through both Barbary Wars in North Africa, the Quasi-War with France, and the War of 1812 with Britain. He was renowned for his natural ability to lead and for his genuine concern for the seamen under his command. Samuel Putnam Waldo(1780-1826) was an American writer and biographer from Connecticut. He wrote of major current figures in US history including President Monroe (1818), Andrew Jackson (1820) and Stephen Decatur (1821). Original's copyright has long ago expired. The copy for sale consists of copies of the pages of a copy from the original publications (whew!) - some of which have been enlarged and "cleaned-up" for improved legibility. Pages numbered only on original copy. It is doubtful that many of us could read the original any other way. Paperback is tight, clean and unmarked. The copy for sale has always been privately owned. Copied original was published in 1821 by P. B. Goodsell in Hartford CT. This copy has no claims of copyright and is stated to have been made in Lexington, KY on March 29, 2013, probably POD.
