[Periodicals.] Pictorial Times, A Weekly Journal of News, Literature, Fine Arts, and the Drama, London: n.p., 1843.Folio, weekly issues from No. 1 on March 19 through the issue of Aug. 19, pp. viii, 372, green cloth boards with gilt and red decoration and lettering to spine and front and blind-stamped floral motif to front and back, all edges gilt, bookplate and notes on front paste-down, extensive illustration with engravings by Henry Vizitelly and others. Includes an outstanding example of early aviation illustration with an article on William Henson's aerial steam carriage, a flying machine that he had patented in the previous year. The machine anticipated much that would become part of the airplane, but it proved impossible to fly because of the weight of its steam engine. Also here is an illustration of brutality committed against Brazilian slaves, as well as anti-slavery efforts led by Wilberforce, Sharp and Clarkson. Lighter fare includes a spread on the Epsom Derby and regular fashion features.This weekly lasted until 1848, when it was merged into the Lady's Newspaper. Vizitelly not only illustrated but edited.
