George Philip, F.R.G.S., ed. Philips' Four Sheet Strategical Map of Europe [titled on sheets: Philips' Strategical Map of Central Europe]. London: George Philip & Son, Ltd., The London Geographical Institute, 32 Fleet Street, E.C. 4. [Ca. 19141918]. Four large folding lithographed map sheets, each approximately 36 x 45 inches when unfolded, printed in color. Scale 1:1,140,000 (18 miles = 1 inch). In original gray board portfolio (approximately 10 x 16 inches) with printed label on upper cover and index map showing sheet layout. Portfolio covers worn with losses to spine cloth and edge chipping. Maps show splitting along folds, with Section 1 (Western Europe) exhibiting the most significant fold separations; remaining sheets show developing splits at fold intersections. Color remains good throughout and the printed detail is clean and legible. Good, sold as is. A substantial and visually impressive British military-strategic map of Europe published by George Philip & Son during the First World War era. The four sheets together provide continuous coverage from the English Channel and the North Sea to the Black Sea and Asia Minor, and from Scandinavia to North Africa. The map was compiled from the latest Continental Staff Maps and other official sources with the assistance of a military expert, and its legend is designed for strategic and operational use: fortresses, fortified towns, naval arsenals, forts and redoubts, railways, main roads, and canals are all symbolized. The level of topographic detail is extraordinary, with individual villages, river systems, and terrain shading rendered across the full breadth of the European theater. The index map on the portfolio cover still labels Austria-Hungary as a single entity, consistent with a publication date at or near the outbreak of the war. An impressive large-format cartographic production with strong appeal for collectors of WWI material, military cartography, and European history. Satisfaction guaranteed or you can .
