Quarto. A STRIKING 1934 1st Edition of Appleton's allegorical map which follows the flow of tax dollars from the U.S. Treasury to the various New Deal ancillary agencies. On the left is a detailed description of some of the larger agencies with money totals involved and beneath a key of abbreviations of the Federal Agencies. The map depicts the U.S. Treasury in the background as a giant pot of gold, with two dams off to the side representing the Public Works Administration and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. From these three sources money flows out to the myriad other federal agencies. This map was intended to influence public opinion against Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, a big government program to which publisher Henry Luce was vehemently opposed. Considering this map was published during the darkest depths of the Great Depression, when widespread poverty was the norm, the humongous budgetary figures reflected on the map would have seemed unfathomable to many. The verso of the map features an explanation of the upcoming federal budget and predicts economic doom from the rampant government spending - "The end of the world will come some time during the opening weeks of January. That will be when the President of the U.S. goes before Congress to deliver his budget message for the year known as Fiscal 1936. In the figures that his message will contain, whatever they are, the prophets of doom will see fresh evidence that the federal government is engaged in a "spending orgy" that is leading us remorselessly on to complete financial ruin." This historic piece is in excellent condition and measures 22.5" X 14", with the image measuring 19.5" X 11". Perfect for framing and display!
