About this Item

Colour printed paper map 75x46cm. Good, neatly folded, creased with small patch of staining towards one of the corners. This contains several neatly penciled flight lines and numbers, and details for East African Airways flight EC503P from Nairobi to Jeddah on 22.5.62, and Jeddah to Entebbe with diversion to Nairobi on 23.5.62 with times and durations. International Aeradio Limited (IAL), formed by major UK airlines in 1947, provided ground communication, navigation and air traffic control services for their fast developing post-WW2 routes across Europe, Africa, the Middle and Far East. It peaked in the 1960s with 3000 staff in 58 countries, primarily owned by BOAC and BEA with several other airlines participating. Centred on Addis Ababa, coverage is bounded by Wadi Halfa on the Nile (NW), Riyan on the Aden Protectorate coast (ENE), the Seychelles (ESE), and Elizabethville (SW). The colour is primarily green, with Yemen and southern Egypt shown in pink. Details include air corridors, selected settlements, major rivers and lakes, with selected spot heights. Airspace Restrictions are given for several locations in Arabia, Aden, Congo, East Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Rhodesia & Nyasaland, Somaliland / Djibouti, and Sudan. These distinguish Danger, Prohibited, Instrument Flying, Gunnery, Game Reserve, Exercises & Firing, Flying Training, Military Flying, Parachuting, and Unreported. Call Signs are given for locations in Aden, Bahrain, Cairo, Khartoum, Leopoldville, Nairobi, and Salisbury with frequencies and remarks.
