Antique map of North Africa. This map is the most continental of Ptolemy's four Africa maps. The area depicted here was the known part of the continent in Roman times. In the south the sources of the Nile. Beautiful cartouche top right. Latin text on the back. The map was made by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), based on the geographer Claudius Ptolemy. Hand-coloured copper engraving, published in Leiden in 1618 in "Theatrum Geografiae Veteris, (.)," Petrus Bertius. Dimensions (image): 32 x 48 cm.
