Africa.(Old Maps, 19th Century Maps, Africa, Fictional Cartography, Mountains of the Moon, Port of Aden). Issued 1853, Edinburgh by A. & C. Black. Engraved in London by S. Hall. Beautiful mid-19th century antique map. Engraved with original soft hand color. With large inset maps of Madeira and Port of Aden at bottom corners. We note the presence of the mythical Mountains of the Moon (Jebel-el-Kumri), running East-West just south of "Soudan". Interior still mostly blank, Lake N'yassi erroneously shown without Victoria, etc. Paper gently and uniformly age-toned, but otherwise a clean and fine example. Map displays a pleasant, mellow age patina. Sheet measures c. 12 1/4" x 17 1/4". Printed area measures c. 10 1/4" x 14 1/2". Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, vol. 2, p. 253.[R35550].
