Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 -1782) French cartographer to the King, was particularly noted for his refusal to slavishly copy the work of his predecessors as was so common at that time. His maps of ancient geography especially, were based on extensive research and he was not afraid to leave large areas of his maps completely blank if he did not havesufficient evidence to draw on.
