About this Item
Original green printed paper case 12 x 20cm, with Handy Up-to-date Guide to Cairo bound inside front 12 x 16cm, 54 + (15)pp local adverts + Additions and Corrections to 1927 (1)pp; and colour paper Guide Map of Cairo bound opposite, opening to 67 x 83cm. Both are credited to R. de Vere Beauclark. Dated 1927 from the Additions and Corrections, which references the Tutankhamun discoveries. A favourable review from "The Sphinx" (11 March 1922) indicates the first edition had appeared by then. Covers very good with creasing to extremities, and bookseller's ticket to the front (N. Sigalis, opposite Cook's Office, Cairo). Guide fine. Map good only, neatly folded with bright colour, but with closed fold tear along one panel, nicks to fold edges, minor loss at intersections, and light creasing. The map, 1:10,000, covers the Giza Zoological Gardens (W) to the Citadel (E), and Tawfikia School (N) to the Port of Old Cairo (S), locating sites from various eras including the Copts, Abbassids, Mamluks, Napoleon etc as well as the present. The Abbassid suburb of El Askar and site of El Fustat are shown to be under extensive rubbish hills (excavations taking place to the latter). Text boxes cover a Tramway Guide, and Historical Outline up to 1914. The guide includes adverts for local establishments such as Shepheard's, Semiramis, Mena House, Continental, Groppis, Thomas Cook etc. This appears to be extremely rare with few references found.
