This is a very nice polychromatic map of Chicago and the street car routes in 1887. Street cars were expensive to operate when horses were the motive power. The use of cables was introduced around 1881. By the time this map was issued around 1887, many lines were cable car lines.Chicago City Railway began it in 1881. Chicago Passenger Railway added cable in 1883. By 1887 Chicago Street Railway began using cables as their motive power source. The layout was extensive as illustrated by this map. Almost every street in the loop that was oriented north to south had a street railway. The farther from city center the less dense the coverage. The later uniform fare with transfer made early travel easy. Chicago at one time had 3200 passenger cars with 1000 miles of track. Fair condition having been significantly repaired using archival mending tape.
