A Correct map of Minorca with a… Plan of Fort St. Philip by John Lodge 1781. Antique copperplate map. The accompanying text article, originally published with the map, will be included; John Lodge (September 1781). 29.5 x 40.0cm, 11.75 x 15.75 inches; this is a folding map. Condition: Good. The map was published lacking part of the right hand edge including the upper right border, which have both been neatly restored. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain. At the time of publication, Menorca was under British control. This rare map was created to depict the ongoing siege of Fort St. Philip by French and Spanish forces, which began in August 1781 as part of the American Revolutionary War. The siege culminated in the recapture of Menorca from the British in February 1782. The island was formally returned to Spain under the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
