Course of the Mississippi River from the Baliae to Fort Chartes Taken on an Expedition to the Illinois in the latter end of the year 1765

This is a foundation map of the lower Mississippi River at the opening of statehood for contiguous states Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. While the first edition was significant as a bellwether documentation of the West at the time of the Revolutionary War, this map was the definition of the western boundaries after the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. It was not until the release of Collot's map in 1826 that better definition of the area covered was conveyed to the public. This second edition stands on its own as an important document for the fledgling nation.
