Very good. Even overall toning. Verso repairs to centerfold separations. Blank on verso. Size 13 x 20 Inches. This is an 1884 Puck political cartoon grappling with the 'question of Mormonism'. Constructed in four panels done by four different Puck cartoonists, each panel presents each artist's perspective on the 'Mormon question', three of which address the question of polygamy/marriage in the Mormon faith. Different Perspectives on Mormon Polygamy Starting at the top left, drawn by Bernhard Gillam (1856 - 1896), the panel is entitled, 'I think one wife is enough', which, over course, is referencing the highly controversial and long-since banned, Mormon practice of polygamy. Here, Gillam is illustrated fleeing from his wife who has ahold of him by his coattails. She is wielding a fireplace scoop, which it looks like Gillam is trying desperately to avoid. Both panels along the bottom row also look at this part of the Mormon religion. The left panel, drawn by Joseph Ferdinand Keppler (1838 - 1894), states, 'I imagine it must be a perfect Paradise'. In the cartoon, Keppler has drawn himself seated on a large cushion, dressed like a cartoonish Ottoman, and smoking a hookah, at the center of a harem. He is being served fresh fruits, champagne, and coffee by the women attending to him, while others fan him with a large plumed fan, sing, dance, and play music. This, obviously, is in stark contrast to Gillam's perceived perception. Friedrich Graetz (c. 1840 - c. 1913) presents yet another perspective on the marriage question, although this one is more of a commentary on marriage in American society in general than Mormonism specifically. In his panel, Graetz has also drawn himself and asks the question, 'What is the use of Mormonism, when a man can change his wife whenever he likes?' Behind him, mobs of men are running, pushing, and shoving their way toward buildings marked 'Divorces obtained for $5.00', 'Divorces procured without delay Liberal Charges', and 'Divorces without publicity'. A banner hung above the street states, 'Saturday Divorce Day in Chicago'. The Mormon Question The top right panel, drawn by Frederick Opper (1857 - 1937) addresses a different question about Mormonism, as a threat to American, and by extension global, society. He entitled his panel, 'How long will this destructive monster be allowed to live?' Mormonism is depicted at the center of the panel as an octopus (with several more than eight tentacles, but who's counting?) and its tentacles are reaching out to all aspects of American society. One tentacle is wrapped around Uncle Sam, while another is reaching into a New York dive bar, presumably after the alcohol, since Mormons are not allowed to drink. Yet another is after the Catholic church, while another is wrapped around Justice's waste. The public-school system, the Y.M.C.A., public opinion, and even Congress are all at risk from Mormonism's reach. Yet another tentacle is stretched all the way to Ireland. Geographicus Rare Antique Maps offers a full guarantee of authenticity on every map we sell. We do not trade in modern reproductions or contemporary copies. A signed Certificate of Authenticity will accompany every map we sell. Any map legitimately found to be a fake or reproduction may be returned to Geographicus at any time for a full refund. Returns based on claims of inauthenticity must be accompanied by no less than two letters from industry professionals (other ABAA/ILAB dealers, map librarians, map curators, certified appraisers, auctions house specialists, etc.) attesting that the map or book in question is a contemporary forgery or reproduction and explaining their reasoning.
Payment
Geographicus accepts cash, checks (U.S. Dollars only), Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover, PayPal and bank transfers. Items purchased by check will be held until the funds are verified by our bank - this may take up to one week. Certain transactions paid by major credit cards may also be delayed if our merchant processer's fraud department identifies high levels of risk. We do not accept traveler checks, money orders, or cashier checks.
Customs and Tax

Shipping terms
Shipping
Geographicus ships Fedex Ground orders Tuesday, and Thursday. Typically orders placed before 3PM EST during these days, will be shipped on the same day. Orders placed after 3PM EST will be shipped on the next shipping day. For domestic shipping, we use FedEx Ground, FedEx Express, and if necessary USPS Express. International shipments are dispatched via DHL or FedEx International, depending on the size of parcel and destination. Other shipping can be arranged on request but may incur additional fees. We do not ship on Saturdays, Sundays, or official U.S. Holidays. All shipments require a signature on delivery. All shipments are insured. Clients will be provided with a tracking number for all shipments. Geographicus does not use freight forwarders or third party shipping agents.
We do our best to ensure timely delivery of your purchases. Nonetheless, even the best courier services do not have perfect track records. Holidays, weekends, international customs, vehicle breakdowns, and inclement weather can result in unforeseen and unavoidable delays. If you are purchasing an item for a gift or you otherwise have a specific deadline, please specify this information on your order form and use a shipping method that allows a safe time cushion for receipt of your order.

Geographicus does not refund any shipping, handling, storage fees or international customs charges that the buyer may incur after purchasing an item from us. Insurance
All maps and books shipped to and from Geographicus Rare Antique Maps are insured by our Fine Arts Dealer policy. The deductible on all shipped items is 100 USD. The deductible is paid by the shipper unless otherwise agreed. Damage claims must be filed within 7 days of receipt to be honored. Lost parcel claims can be filed up to 3 months after the shipment is sent.
