Very good. Mounted on linen. Size 18 x 39 Inches. This is a 1920 Waterlow map of the world illustrating the global telegraph network. Red overprinting highlights the lines of the Eastern and Associated Telegraph Companies. Connecting London with the world, the network 'jumps' from port to port, with a few overland connections in British India and Australia. Insets Three insets along the bottom border detail three key locations. The central inset focuses on the British Isles and Western Europe and red text labels with which city each outgoing telegraph cable connects. The left inset details Greece and the Aegean Sea, where the Eastern and Associated Telegraph Companies (and the companies they merged with) laid a lot of cable. A smaller inset highlights Cyprus and its telegraph cables. The inset on the right illustrates Indonesia, the Malacca Strait, and Singapore, the hub of the British East India trade. The Eastern and Associated Telegraph Companies In 1902, the Eastern Telegraph Company and The Eastern Extension, Australasia, and China Telegraph Company (and ten smaller companies - one of which could trace its origins back to 1857) merged to form the Eastern and Associated Telegraph Companies (1902 - 1929). One of its preceding companies (the Eastern Telegraph Company) operated 160,000 nautical miles of cable at its height, which converts to approximately 184,000 miles, or 7.4 times around the Earth! The company ceased to exist in 1929 when it merged with six other broadcast and cable companies to form Imperial and International Communications Ltd. Publication History and Census This map was created by Waterlow and Sons and published for the Eastern and Associated Telegraph Companies in 1920. We locate an example of the 1920 at the National Library of Australia, as well as 5 examples in OCLC: Brunel University London, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Cambridge, the University of Otago, and the University of Queensland. Shipping
Geographicus ships Fedex Ground orders Tuesday, and Thursday. Typically orders placed before 3PM EST during these days, will be shipped on the same day. Orders placed after 3PM EST will be shipped on the next shipping day. For domestic shipping, we use FedEx Ground, FedEx Express, and if necessary USPS Express. International shipments are dispatched via DHL or FedEx International, depending on the size of parcel and destination. Other shipping can be arranged on request but may incur additional fees. We do not ship on Saturdays, Sundays, or official U.S. Holidays. All shipments require a signature on delivery. All shipments are insured. Clients will be provided with a tracking number for all shipments. Geographicus does not use freight forwarders or third party shipping agents.
We do our best to ensure timely delivery of your purchases. Nonetheless, even the best courier services do not have perfect track records. Holidays, weekends, international customs, vehicle breakdowns, and inclement weather can result in unforeseen and unavoidable delays. If you are purchasing an item for a gift or you otherwise have a specific deadline, please specify this information on your order form and use a shipping method that allows a safe time cushion for receipt of your order.
Handling, Customs, and Storage
Geographicus does not refund any shipping, handling, storage fees or international customs charges that the buyer may incur after purchasing an item from us. All customs charges are the buyer's responsibility and will vary from country to country. Insurance
All maps and books shipped to and from Geographicus Rare Antique Maps are insured by our Fine Arts Dealer policy. The deductible on all shipped items is 100 USD. The deductible is paid by the shipper unless otherwise agreed. Damage claims must be filed within 7 days of receipt to be honored. Lost parcel claims can be filed up to 3 months after the shipment is sent.
