PLease Note: the photo only shows part of the map. The Old Series was laid out to a strict grid. As a result, small sections of the mainland appear on large sheets, with much of the map given over to the sea. This particular map has part of sheet 23 attached to sheet 24. Sheet 23 had a large amount of sea and the original owner has discarded this, leaving a 2x2 panel section which was then attached to sheet 24. Sheet 24 comprised of panels arranged 2x6, so with the attachment the whole map is now 2x8 (sheet 23 is the right hand side). This is clearly visible as the printing of 23 is paler than 24. Condition: all margins trimmed, with a hint of border to the upper edge. General dust-marking and spotting. Slight spotting and toning to reverse. No holes. Railway marked in red on 23 (added later, as no railway symbol beneath the colour) and black on 24 (railway symbol is beneath the colour). Dating points for 23: no railway on original printing (pre-1860); fathoms and values marked (prob. post 1840) with other factors that might have helped would have been in the margins. Dating points for 24: realignment of key words within Plymouth, associated with copies of around 1860/61 but other factors that might have helped would have been in the margins. It is assumed therefore, that the combined maps date close to 1860. (o1413). …
