Add to basketBy Joh. et Cornelius Blaeu Published by R. S. Shearer & Son, Stirling, 1891 From Blaeu s Atlas of Scotland, originally issued in Amsterdam, 1654 Dimensions: 23.5" x 18.5" (open); 9" x 10.25" (closed) Medium: Engraved map, black and white, folded and mounted in gilt-titled maroon cloth boards This handsome 1891 reprint faithfully reproduces one of the most significant maps from Blaeu s Atlas Novus specifically the sheet depicting Lothian and Linlithgowshire, two historic counties of southeastern Scotland. The map was originally engraved by Cornelius Blaeu, son of the celebrated Dutch mapmaker Johannes Blaeu, whose Atlas Maior remains among the grandest cartographic productions of the 17th century. The plate itself traces the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh to Linlithgow, beautifully ornamented with baroque cartouches, a compass rose, and the Blaeu family arms. The lower border credits "Timoth. Pont," acknowledging Timothy Pont s pioneering 16th-century Scottish surveys, which formed the basis for Blaeu s Scottish maps. This edition was reprinted by R. S. Shearer & Son, Stirling, in 1891, as part of a limited series of facsimiles celebrating early Scottish cartography. The folding map is housed in its original gilt-lettered binding, titled Lothian and Linlitquo 1654, and remains clean and crisp, with only minor wear at the folds and corners.
