MAP, Manuscript, USA, Georgia and Florida. [++] This is a manuscript map, drawn in pencil on laid paper, by "George W. Safford", probably done as an adolescent, and again probably pre-Civil War (US). 11"x 7.5". There is no overt mention of a date, and there is no watermark in the (fairly fine) paper. The drawing is assured and restrained, with an interesting flair in the printing of the states' names and mountains. [++] This is a bit curious, this map, for what and how it represents this region. The mam-maker Safford proudly labels the map "GEORGIA" though to me the main focus seems to be Florida. Indeed, "Georgia" isn't even labeled so on the map, nor is its neighbor, Alabama, though the little bits of other bordering state are (for example, "Mississippie"[sic]). Anyway, it is a good-looking map with a certain artistic way and a nice feel to it. There are a good number of enumerated locations/rivers/etc.--unfortunately there is no index or key. Overall, though, this is rather charming, with some nice artistic flairs.quite nice. [++] Note on condition: this is in VG condition with evidence of an ancient three fold mostly visible on rear.
