About this Item
Colour paper folding map 120x82cm. About very good, neatly folded, tanned and foxed with some marks, creases, and small perforations. This is Sheet 12 in the Outline Plotting (PO) Series of 43 aeronautical charts on a 1/5M scale, prepared using the Lambert Conformal Conic Projection with World Geographic Reference System (Georef) grid. The series appears to have started during WW2 and ran into the 1950s (Worldcat). The code suggests this one was prepared in January 1952, and printed in September 1953 (ACIC-SN 1-52, Base 3, Litho ACIC 9-53). ACIC itself was formed in 1952 as the latest in a line of redesignations of the Aeronautical Chart Service "to meet the requirements of all Air Force commands and other military organizations in the Department of Defense" by preparing and distributing charts, target materials, flight-information, data, and related material. A note invites military users to submit corrections and additions to ACIC. Centred on Iran, coverage is bounded by Rumania (NW), Mongolia (NE), Calcutta and the head of the Bay of Bengal (SE), and Mecca and the Red Sea coast (SW). It therefore includes all of the Persian Gulf naming its islands, and much of the Gulf of Oman including Muscat and Oman's exclave of Gwadar. Details include boundaries (international, intercolonial or interterritorial, and state or provincial, distinguishing those not necessarily recognised by the US), railroads, and settlements of various sizes. Iran's long boundaries with Afghanistan and Pakistan are labelled "indefinite". Parts of Iran are "unsurveyed". And its railroad between Kashan and Yazd on the line from Tehran is labelled "under construction". Much of the Arabian Peninsula is shown, with Saudi boundaries marked as "undetermined" in the area of Trucial Oman and Qatar, "undemarcated" with Iraq, Kuwait and Neutral Territory, and "indefinite" with Jordan and Syria. Other features include oil pipelines, oil fields, and notes on geographical features such as sand dunes, lakes, swamps, and mountains with spot heights. Practical information includes a PO Series index map, nautical mile scale, Georef guidelines, and conversion of elevations scale. Rare. (Reference: USAF Unit History website).
