About this Item
Colour paper linen backed map 53x69cm. Good only with closed fold tears, wear along folds with minor loss at intersections, light creasing, and some marks. Second edition 1945 (the first was in 1930). Labelled in English and Arabic. This presents a highly detailed view of wartime Cairo, its social characteristics, military and colonial establishments, transport network, industry, agriculture and business. The area roughly centres on Gezira, and is bounded by the convergence of the El Istabl and El Baragil Canals (NW), Egyptian Army Barracks (NE), and Holy Virgin's Church (S). Different levels of administrative boundaries are marked, including Mudariya, Markaz, Governorate, House Tax (at the edge of Gebel El-Muqattam based on the Decree of 30 March 1915), Village, and Administrative, with individual small districts named or numbered. The dense network of canals is shown especially on the unbuilt on land to the west, distinguishing based on width (over 10 metres, 5-10m, 1.5-10m). Bridges of different varieties are named (eg, swing bridges, their load bearing, width, etc). Railways distinguish standard, light and trolley lines, and roads range from principal to main desert communication tracks, the latter exiting from below the Citadel into the Muqattam hills. Individual educational establishments, palaces, hotels, military, clubs, museums, hospitals, factories, religious establishments, justice, cemeteries are laid out and named. The layout of Ezbekiya Gardens is shown, with important surrounding establishments including Shepheard's, Continental Savoy, Royal Opera House, etc. Ancient sites include Fustat and the remains of its old wall.
