About this Item
Blueprint map with hand colouring 68x101cm. This has been pinned up for display at some point. The condition is good, neatly folded into 9 sections with marks along one of the folds, minor loss at intersections, and pinholes with discolouration at the corners from tape that has fallen away. This highly unusual working map on a scale of 1cm to 10km shows the course of a radio line (coloured green) closely following that of an oil pipeline (red) connecting Abadan at the head of the Persian Gulf to Tehran. Undated, but possibly 1962-65 when Iran built a new refinery in Tehran to receive oil from Khuzestan to meet local demand, or slightly earlier. The lines pass through several towns (Hassanabad, Qum, Raghird, Arak, Azna, Kuh-I-Safid, Razan, Zagheh, Chaghani, Tangi Fanni, Andimeshk, Ahwaz, Dorkwain) and pumping stations (PS). Symbols are used at each of these points to indicate the presence of a carrier bay, and define the type of station located there (repeater, terminal, intermediate terminal, Phase I, Phase II Pumping). Each point also has a circular technical diagram connected to it, giving the individual specifications with respect to towers and masts (with heights), bayside carriers, power supply, notes on installation, telephone, etc.
