The Hennepin Canal was designed to connect the Mississippi River to the Illinois River saving 400+ miles required to access the natural access to the Illinois River just north of St. Louis at Alton Illinois. The map shows the potential routes of the canal. The actual canal was opened in 1907 just in time for the railroads to functionally supplant the canal's carriage. This map is in very good condition as is accompanied by the original report to Congress. Very good but has tear repaired with scotch tape where the map meets the booklet.
