Emanuel Bowen. A New & Accurate Chart of the World Drawn from Authentic Surveys . . . 1747. A copper plate engraving with outline hand coloring. The map appears to be plotted using Mercator's Projection but does not say so. The greatest amount of geographic knowledge is near sea coasts. The interiors of the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia were sparsely explored by Europeans. Australia is only partly on the map, and forget about Antarctica. Some interesting old place names, spurious islands and land masses, a giant whirlpool off Norway, etc. Bowen went to some effort to include lines of magnetic variation, and there is an explanation of how it was done in the lower left quadrant. Decorative cartouche in the upper left corner. *** Sharp, clean impression with good color, blank verso. One center vertical fold, as issued. Some damage at bottom center of map with small loss, repaired on verso with archival materials. Narrow top and bottom margins, with bottom margin slightly tattered, side margins close cropped to neat line. *** The sheet is approx. 14.75 inches high by 17.5 inches. Seller Inventory # M0018
