Fine detail and beautiful hand coloring highlight this offering of Cowperthwaite's Ohio in 1850. This was an early attempt to graphically present the internal improvements that were drastically altering the commercial and physical landscape of Ohio. The land under cultivation provided surplus to satisfy the demands of the southern and eastern consumers. The South in 1850 had a sizable shortage of grains and foodstuffs in 1850. In 1850 the demand of the east coast was satiated by grains of the interior farms in Ohio that was forwarded through the Erie Canal. Ohio Canals are noted by blue lines and railroads by orange-yellow lines. !850 marked a period of the ascendency of Ohio railroads in the grain trade.This is a superb example of the mapmakers art. very good with a period patina.
