North Huntingdon and Chatteris 1905: One Inch Sheet 172

Here is information about Sheet 172: One Inch Sheet 172 North Huntingdonshire & Chatteris 1905 - published 2002; intro by David Cozens. ISBN.978-1-84151-458-1 This One Inch to the Mile map covers most of the northern half of Huntingdonshire, while the NE corner of the map is in the Isle of Ely portion of Cambridgeshire. Coverage stretches from Great Gidding eastward to Chatteris, and from Alwalton southward to Somersham. Ramsey is in the centre of the map, much of which is fenland, a "black flat landscape". The GNR main line runs across the map, an area described before the arrival of the railway as "dark-green alders, pale-green reeds that stretched for miles around the broad lagoon, where the coot clanked and the bittern boomed". The long lost railways to Ramsey and Chatteris are also shown. On the back we include an extract from Cambridgeshire Sheet 20.02, showing the village of Benwick in detail in 1900.
