Large folding map, Northumberland, England. 32 panels, about 10 x 7 1/2 inches each, securely mounted on canvas. "Printed from an electrotype taken in 1878". Scale of one inch to a statute mile. Engraved at the Ordnance Survey Office Southampton under the direction of Colonel J. Cameron. Published by Colonel Sir Henry James, Superindendent, 1867-1868. When unfolded, the map measures about 40 x 62 inches. When folded, it measures 10 x 7 3/4 inches. Slipcase with the label of a London mapseller, Edward Stanford. Map good. Slipcase fair. "Major-General Sir Henry James FRS MRIA (1803 1877) was a Royal Engineers officer who served as the director-general of the Ordnance Survey, the British Government mapping agency, from 1854 to 1875. Sir Henry was described by the agency itself as "perhaps Ordnance Survey's most eccentric and egotistical Director General".[1] Sir Henry spent most of his life working for the Ordnance Survey and after becoming its head he introduced the new science of photography. He also would later claim to be the inventor of the process known as Photozincography or Zinco. Sir Henry also played a part in the resolving of the battle of the scales." (1722RO005).
