About this Item
Original publisher's hand-colored map showing parts of Southeast Asia and East Asia. A beautiful map with blue, green, yellow, orange, and pink outlines delineating the political boundaries. No date, circa 1840. Map with margins measures 12 3/4" x 17 1/2"; actual map area measures 10 1/2" x 14 1/8." Map is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. The following countries are included: Borneo, the Philippines, Siam (known today as Thailand), Celebes (present-day Sulawesi), Formosa (modern-day Taiwan), China, Cambodia, Laos, Birmah/Burma (modern-day Myanmar), Cochinchina and Tonquin (modern-day Vietnam), and Sumatra, Java, Timor, and other islands within the Malay Archipelago (some of these islands are part of modern-day Indonesia). Parts of India and Tibet are also shown. Major cities, rivers, and other geographical features are included. "Engraved by S. Hall, Bury Strt., Bloomsbury" is printed in lower-right corner. "XL" is printed in the upper-right corner. The title and scale of distance in miles are printed in the lower-left corner. Lines of latitude and longitude also included. This map has no date but is likely from the 1840 edition of Black's General Atlas. Adam Black (1784-1874) was a Scottish publisher and politician. He founded the A & C Black publishing company in 1807 which still operates to this day. His nephew, Charles Black, joined his company a few years later. "S. Hall" stands for Selina Hall (1782-1853), a Welsh scientist and map engraver. Selina was married to Sidney Hall (1788-1831), an English map publisher and engraver. Sidney made a name for himself as a reputable engraver in the mapmaking industry. Upon Sidney's passing in 1931, Selina took over his business and signed her maps under "S. Hall" for continuity and to capitalize on her husband's name as it was not widely accepted at the time for women to be cartographers. Seller Inventory # 020126
