Original publisher's black and white map of "African countries" that shows the northwestern part of Africa, part of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. This is a beautiful map that shows major towns along with natural geographic features such as rivers and mountains. The Tropic of Cancer is shown going through the northern part of Africa. No date, circa 1683-1719. Map with margins measures 5 1/2" x 8 1/4"; actual map area measures 4" x 5 3/4." Map is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. Axes of latitude and longitude also included. "Figure LXI." is printed in the back lower-right corner (the corresponding plate is not included as it would be on the following page). The front is labeled as Page "159"; the back is Page "160." On the back are brief descriptions of some of the towns and people of the region shown on the map. Text is in French. Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. Mallet began his career a soldier under King Louis XIV and also served under the King of Portugal. With his mathematics and military engineering background, Mallet was appointed as teacher of mathematics at the court of King Louis XIV. The map and text come from Mallet's atlas, Description de l'Univers, which includes maps from around the world with accompanying descriptions of the local people and culture. The atlas was first published in 1683 and had later editions until 1719. Seller Inventory # 020208
