Good. Some spotting. Remounted on fresh linen with neutral edging. Size 33 x 52 Inches. A remarkable 1899 wall map of Puerto Rico printed shortly after the island's annexation at the end of the Spanish-American War (April 21, 1898 - August 13, 1898). The map is derived from the U.S. Army General Staff Map, used to plan American military action in Puerto Rico. It is also the largest and best map of the island yet produced. Like the General Staff Map, this chart is incomplete, with some areas exhibiting only the most spartan cartographic detail. Sources In addition to the identified sources, map scholars Raymond B. Craib and D. Graham Burnett propose, Several clues suggest that the General Staff Map of Puerto Rico, from which this was copied, was itself copied at least in part from captured Spanish sources. Not only are the radii of visibility for the lighthouses given in Spanish, but in several places, an ellipsis followed by a question mark indicate that a copyist was unable to decipher what was probably a manuscript source. Tracing of the islands standing off the southern shore is also incomplete: they appear as ghostly fragments of territory. (Craib, R. B., and Burnett D. The Spanish-American War The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States between April 21, 1898, and August 13, 1898. The war started after the USS Maine suffered a massive explosion and sank in Havana Harbor. Tensions had been rising between the two countries for some time, with the U.S. showing support for Cuban independence while Spain claimed Cuba to be a province of Spain. The Spanish were quickly outclassed and outnumbered by the U.S. forces and surrendered after minimal conflict. After the fighting ended, the U.S. received the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico along with Cuba as U.S. protectorates. Publication History and Census This map is based upon the work of the U.S. Coast Survey, enhanced by additional wartime cartographic reconnaissance by the U.S. Army Engineering Corps operating under Brigadier General Roy Stone, and seized Spanish maps. Shipping
Geographicus ships Fedex Ground orders Tuesday, and Thursday. Typically orders placed before 3PM EST during these days, will be shipped on the same day. Orders placed after 3PM EST will be shipped on the next shipping day. For domestic shipping, we use FedEx Ground, FedEx Express, and if necessary USPS Express. International shipments are dispatched via DHL or FedEx International, depending on the size of parcel and destination. Other shipping can be arranged on request but may incur additional fees. We do not ship on Saturdays, Sundays, or official U.S. Holidays. All shipments require a signature on delivery. All shipments are insured. Clients will be provided with a tracking number for all shipments. Geographicus does not use freight forwarders or third party shipping agents.
We do our best to ensure timely delivery of your purchases. Nonetheless, even the best courier services do not have perfect track records. Holidays, weekends, international customs, vehicle breakdowns, and inclement weather can result in unforeseen and unavoidable delays. Geographicus does not refund any shipping, handling, storage fees or international customs charges that the buyer may incur after purchasing an item from us. All customs charges are the buyer's responsibility and will vary from country to country. Insurance
All maps and books shipped to and from Geographicus Rare Antique Maps are insured by our Fine Arts Dealer policy. The deductible on all shipped items is 100 USD. The deductible is paid by the shipper unless otherwise agreed. Damage claims must be filed within 7 days of receipt to be honored. Lost parcel claims can be filed up to 3 months after the shipment is sent.
